Grace in Your Face

Here's an innovative Internet-only ad launched this morning by my church, the United Church of Christ. Feel free to view, comment, and share.

That's what a progressive church looks like. I love my church!

ETA: It looks like the church bloggers have crashed YouTube. The video is also available on Vimeo.

A Taxing Day

Early this morning, a nice policeman went door to door to advise everyone on my street that there would be no car traffic today. Shortly thereafter, a contraption started cutting the road. Here it is at the end of my driveway.

Cutting

This was followed by digging.

Digging

And yet more digging.

More digging

Then they all went away for a while, and the sun went behind a cloud. The more diffuse light makes it easier to see my crabapple tree is blooming.

Nothing

To be continued....

Frolic

Spring has sprung and then some roundabout Exit 151 – after all the rain, it's suddenly, unseasonably hot, which is accelerating spring bloom like crazy. Yesterday (Easter Sunday) 70% of the cherry trees in Branch Brook Park were at peak bloom – two weeks before cherry blossom festival weekend. Naturally, I had to go for a frolic.

Branch Brook Park

Whilst frolicking, I was eliminated from Sock Madness. More precisely, I'm out of the competition but still included as a cheerleader – I get all the patterns, but no glory. Ah well, I shan't cry; life goes on.

Many Skew wips

It seemed appropriate to start Skew by Lana Holden on April Fool's Day, but it turned out the joke's on me – the unusual construction of the sock means a certain amount of fussing to get proper fit, particularly for smaller feet or feet with nonstandard proportions (the designer gives helpful advice on her blog). Once that's done, the knitting is straightforward, no more challenging than mitered mittens or Clapotis. I'm not sure why the pattern merits being rated Piquant.

Close up of cherry blossoms

Gentle readers may detect a whiff of danger in those remarks. Strange how I never tire of the simple beauty of cherry blossoms, yet some knitting turns insipid quickly. Would that my kniting were as lovely as a tree!

Flash Your Stash 2010

Well, call me an April Fool. I suddenly realized why I like the Noro Taiyo I just bought.

Noro Taiyo and Fortissima Mexiko

Its springy, Easter eggy colors are remarkably similar to the Fortissima Mexiko I used for my Simple Side to Side Socks. I was thinking of using it for the contrast part of a contrast yoke cardigan. Hm....

Unexpected

This evening when I got home, there was earth-moving equipment and a mound of silty gravel in front of a neighbor's house. That was a surprise. PSE&G is replacing gas mains two streets over – I didn't expect they'd stash equipment on my street.

Earth moving equipment

It's also a surprise how strongly the Cool Beans stripe pattern tends to dominate the beans pattern in finished socks. The MC and CC colors I'm using only emphasize that tendency.

Cool Beans in progress

The pattern calls for beans on the instep and stripes on the sole, and a striped toe. I'm thinking of cooling down the high contrast stripes by working them in the same color as the beans for the rest of the foot, then working high contrast stripes on the toe. What say you? Carry on as established or switch? Either way, I'm going to place a lifeline just in case.
